Mounting and wiring
Where to put the reader, what to wire to the relay output, and why metal behind the enclosure ruins the range.
Where to mount it
Around 130 cm above the floor works best — high enough that nobody has to crouch, low enough that nobody has to reach. Next to a door, mount it on the handle side rather than the hinge side.
- Leave clear space in front of the reader. Cards are read from a few centimetres, so a shelf or a door frame right next to it costs more range than you would expect.
- Do not mount directly onto sheet metal or a metal frame. Metal behind the enclosure damps the reader field, and cards stop working unless they touch the housing.
- Keep some distance from routers, switches and switching power supplies — they all crowd the same band.
Power
Power the device from a 5 V supply rated for at least 2 A. A weaker supply can look fine at idle and fail only when the reader, the radio and the relay draw current at the same time — that is, at the moment a card is presented. Once powered, the device plays a short melody and flashes the LED; that means it has started.
Relay output
The output releases a lock or a magnet. On the relay connector, the outer contact on the USB-C side is the supply positive for the connected device, and the middle contact is the output to that device. The third contact is not connected.
The working mode of the output — pulse, or inverted for a fail-safe magnet — is set later in the panel; see the relay section. Out of the box it is a three-second pulse.
Network
The wired interface is enabled out of the box and the device takes its address from DHCP. A cable is not needed for setup — the hotspot is enough — but without one the device cannot sync its clock from the internet or push punches to your payroll system.
